Gurren Lagann - Dressed Up to Get Down

Gurren-blackandpink.jpgFirst three episodes of Gurren Lagann - awesome! I knew that at episode 4 I would have to grit my teeth and make it through some crappy art. I tried to imagine I was watching some special episode by some funky director (kinda the truth). I made it through - barely. Then episode 5 looked the same. And 6 and 7 looked almost as bad. I began to lose hope. I stopped watching. It’s a sad situation when this kind of stuff happens. So instead I’ll look at some pretty GL images instead, like this one with the 3 main characters dressed up to go to a cocktail party or something. This is Gurren style, done slightly differently - but done well. *sigh* So, Gurren Lagann fans - at which episode does the art get back to normal?

Bandaged & Blonde

bandages-white-hair-urban.jpgWell, I suppose she’s more platinum blonde than regular blonde, but hey - it sounded better. Something about this image is very intriguing - where is she? what happened to her? why does she look like she wants to totally pwn someone? All of this weight, captured in a very simple, almost monochromatic illustration. If anyone can ID this, I’d be very grateful!

Moe Angel with Headphones

angel with headphones.pngGirls with headphones. I’m certain this is a category of specific interest for guys - I’ll admit I find something very appealing about a girl with some nice cans >.< While in Japan we saw quite a few girls wearing these Panasonic RP-HTX7 ones, which come in a variety of pastel and bright colors and have a certain retro look.

Super Mario Girls!

mario-girls.jpgThe Mario franchise is great and everything, but no disrespect to Mario and Luigi - they just aren’t cute girls! And cute anime girls are perfect for fluffy clouds with faces and bubbly turtles and blocky landscapes. So - when will Nintendo release a game with these 2 gals in it?!

Tony Taka - Girl at Beach

t2-girl on beach.jpgThere is a new figure company out there - TC2F (Toranoana & Creators Collaboration Figure) and as you can guess from their name they’ll be working with 2d artists to make their drawings come alive. First up is Tony Taka with a scantily dressed meido girl. Though I have to admit the figure doesn’t look quite right compared to the illustration - something’s weird about the face and hair. I’d buy the sculpt of Kureha over this bikini maid.

Moe Mondays - Little Busters - Noumi

little-busters-noumi.jpgLittle Busters is a visual novel game. Shown here is Kudryavka Noumi, who is mostly Russian. 75% to be precise.  But she is 100% moelicious.

Touhou - Aya Shameimaru

touhou camera 2 Aya Shameimaru - .jpgI always find it fascinating what a wide range of subject matter ends up being rendered as doujin art. And while art based on games isn’t unexpected, the huge quantity of doujin work based on the Touhou Project (AKA Project Shrine Maiden) is surprising. The Touhou Project is a scrolling shooter game, notable for the sheer insanity of the number of projectiles flying around. The developers, Team Shanghai Alice also put alot of effort into creating personalities for their tiny pixellated girl characters that are dodging those bullets.  This particular image is of Aya Shameimaru, a camera wielding newspaper reporter for the shooter girls. She uses her camera as her weapon and defense. Moetron has a write-up with screenshots. I don’t think I could handle it.

Yotsuba&! - A Day with Yotsuba

yotsuba cat stick.jpgYotsuba&! is a really fun manga that follows the day to day antics of a young, carefree girl named Yotsuba. The mood of the manga is very sweet, with Yotsuba providing all sorts of entertainment varying from innocent goof-ups to outrageously small ‘big adventures’. And this vibe is captured in a most wonderful fashion by the Kuricorder Pops Orchestra (responsible for the Azumanga music) - where they present a day with Yotsuba in musical form. It’s so much fun to listen to the album, reading the track names such as “Making Breakfast” and seeing in your mind what Yotsuba would be up to! Download it here. Curious about the manga? Read it here.

Chobits - Chii Eating Cherries

chobits-cherrys.jpg
Chii is adorable. No two ways about it. I think you could imagine her in any situation and she’d still look cute as a button. When will real technology for persocons become available!? I want one 0.o Though I supposed I’d settle for a Honda Asimo or other supercool Japanese robot. There certainly isn’t a shortage of robots coming from Japan!
